The Isle of Man is the historical centre of the Celtic world, and its influence on design and craft has been profound. Celtic Gold, a family of crafstpeople in the quaint fishing port of Peel, is world famous for its unique interpretations of all things Celtic, which they have been hand-crafting for over twenty-five years.
“We have an enormous variety of styles”, says jeweller, Malcolm Wells. “But that’s not surprising when you consider we have a rich heritage of Manx Celtic designs conceived up to 3,000 years ago to the more recent influence of Archibald Knox whose Celtic Art Nouveau at the turn of the last century inspired an entire art and design movement”.
There has always been a strong symbolic link between nature and language in the Celtic and Norse cultures which define the Isle of Man. Is evolved into the interlaced alphabet we know as Ogham, based on the trees which were essential to their existence and today still found carved into ancient Manx stone crosses that were placed close to the old keills (chapels).
“Celtic design harnesses the power of symbols as a way of expressing emotions beyond words, and we like to think our jewellery speaks for itself in a language everyone understands” explains Malcolm.
Celtic Gold jewellery is often most at home set on one of their stunning Manx Tartan kilts.
“Each kilt is a masterpiece in its way and we are really proud of our kilt specialists. They put their heart and soul into the process” says Malcolm.
Manx Kilts are in demand for special and cermonial occasions all over the world and production of each kilt takes about six weeks and requires about 7 of material. “By the time we have finished them we almost feel we don`t want to part with our kilts!” adds Malcolm.
Celtic Gold is a proud member of Purely Isle of Man, a group of the Island's finest producers and craftspeople working together to bring the best of the Isle of Man to the rest of the world.
